Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas launched its general book publishing division in 2007. We embrace the new book publishing business model that favors eBooks and Print On Demand over long press runs and warehouse inventories. Our authors include Christy Award winners and new writers whose books found their first home with us.
We have one standard for judging a work: Is it biblical? Not biblical as in preaching or teaching, but rather could the story, scenes, and theme be overlaid with Old and New Testament narratives?
For example, does the story deal with rape (Genesis 34: 1-7), incest (Genesis 19:30-38), or getting drunk and naked (Genesis 9:20-23)? Does it show a man in high office seducing an office staffer (2 Samuel 11)? Provided the scene is organic to the story and does not seek to glorify the act, but rather shows its consequences, we will consider it for publication. We do not demand a conversion experience. (Online comments reaffirm that most readers are turned off by overt conversion stories.) In the telling of his parables, Christ rarely presented a conversion experience. He presented the truth and the consequences of living a holy and righteous life as opposed to one filled with sin. We seek stories that tell God’s truth in all its glory – a glory that sometimes includes raw, disturbing scenes. (What could be more chilling than the slow execution of an innocent and naked man hammered to a wooden stake?)
Bottom line? Our characters dance, go to the bathroom, drink, celebrate at parties, and live an abundant life, just like the characters in Scripture. When our books project an agenda (and all stories have an agenda), they point to the goodness of God and his unfailing love, a love that is expressed most often through the lives of others. We believe there is a large market for these types of stories.
